Who Will Make the 200th Comment?
Along with our stunningly early spring, this month celebrates our burgeoning experiment in blogging. We’re just three comments away from having 200 comments — not bad for the blog’s second semester in a small English Major community.
The comments are thrown open to your voices! Please, share your stories about how this blog has changed your life, given you the will to live, and helped you train your dog.
Trained professionals are standing by to listen to your testimonials, their tissue boxes close at hand. Really, don’t hold back. We’d love to hear how, because of this blog, your life will never be the same again.
The lucky 200th commenter will receive an amazing grand prize with magical, mind-bending properties and which can also serve as a portal into a whole new realm!
Okay, it’s a book. Of course it’s a book! It’s the English Major blog…?

I never thought I’d share in a blog. The idea seemed silly but perhaps this was the old fashioned convservative me thinking. I first bacame part of this blog like any other enterprising student. I wanted extra credit. By the end of the fall term I no longer cared about the credit and didn’t submit my entries for recognition.
What truly brought forth the fun and my ultimate interest was when Dr. Durant posted poetry responses to Marlowe’s Passionate Shepherd. It never would have dawned upon me that I would respond to Marlowe’s poetry and certainly not to see it in print where others could have a laugh at my expense. As it turned out the experience was great fun and other students added responses that I hope, as the initial entrant, were spurred by me.
Coining “Blog” was another stroke of computer genious. Bits of thoughts communicated to others forming connections. Nice touch as my thoughts certainly fall within the range of blog and not genious, but now I can share them freely. More important I am able to remain in touch with a class I unfortunately had to withdraw from this semester thus retaining a semblance of the education.
Lastly, this blog has not heped me train my dog though it has helped him keep me in control.
Awww, Bob. Thanks! You’re our 198th commentor….And I’m the 199th….
Drum roll please………..
Bob, It’s good to hear from you. Hope all is well. As a fellow “old-schooler” I didn’t think much of this blogging stuff. I had never posted to a blog and wasn’t sure why anyone would want to waste time doing so. I don’t talk on the phone unless its some relative in a crisis (a list of referrals is kept next to the caller ID box) and don’t answer the door unless compasny is expected.
To an ill-mannered hermit, posting to a blog just didn’t seem right. Idle chit-chat is not my forte’ and I don’t write poetry. I did enjoy your response to Marlowe, by the way. After thinking about Dr. Durant’s invitation to post, I figured, why not give it a try? I don’t have to get up from my chair and I don’t have to respond to anyone if I choose not to. It was beginning to sound like a good fit for an old curmudgeon.
I posted a couple of times and it didn’t hurt at all! There were even some positive responses. I am beginning to think that this may not be a bad thing after all. This semester saw a few more painless postings. Some opinions were put out there and some real discussions were taking place. That’s a good thing!
A potential problem with this type of communication is the anonymity of a writer. There is a risk of the discussion to degrading into a pissing match. People can be very “brave” with what they say if the recipient isn’t looking them in the eye. It isn’t problem with this blog but I have noticed it in other forums as my exposure to blogging has expanded.
Blogging has helped get me off my duff in a literary sense and has been quite enjoyable so far. It has even helped with the dog. He gets a lot more sleep when he knows a 2 hour blogging session is about to start.
Hooray, Greg! You’re our winner! I’ll be in touch about the magnificent prize…. What larks! I’m so glad: you’ve been a quality contributor. And I’m happy to hear about the dog…
I hope it’s “Critical Analysis for Dummies”
Congrats Greg! If it’s a copy of Dr. Durant’s book then I want first dibs on borrowing
Oh darn. I missed it
Congrats Greg!!
Did you(anyone) hear about the reblooming lilac bush?? The picture on the front of the posting reminded me of this. It blooms multiple times unlike the traditional lilac bush who only (sadly) blooms once. Its called a Bloomerang. Just a tidbit of information for those of us who love our lilac bushes and get a bit sad when they are done blooming.
